S$20,000 for 12 months, changed at DBS’s rates: the US dollar deposit (Bank of China at 4.60%) ends ahead of the S$ one unless US$1 falls below S$1.2720 by then, 0.5% below today. Your own amount
US$ or S$ deposit: where you break even
A US dollar deposit pays more interest than a Singapore dollar one, but you get it in US dollars. If you start with S$, you pay to change them into US$ and again to change them back, and if the US dollar falls against the S$ in the meantime, you can end up with fewer S$ than a plain S$ deposit would have paid. Put in your amount and term: you see both deposits, the exchange rate at which they end level, and how often the US dollar has fallen that far before. If you already have US dollars and will need S$ later, choose that: you change money once whichever deposit you pick, so the cost of changing mostly drops out.
US dollar deposit rates for your amount
Most of the top rates need a minimum amount, fresh funds or the bank’s app, and some are only for priority clients or new customers. Put in your amount in US dollars and term, untick what you can’t do, and you see the deals that fit, highest first, with the interest at the end.

How far the US dollar moves against the S$
The extra interest on a US dollar deposit is a few per cent a year at most. The exchange rate can move as much as that in a few months, either way. Here is how US$1 in S$ moved over each term, from every working day of the past 10 years.
| Over | US$ fell | Fell over 2% | Biggest fall | Biggest rise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 month | 55% | 5% | −5.1% | +4.4% |
| 3 months | 53% | 21% | −7.7% | +7.6% |
| 6 months | 56% | 29% | −8.2% | +6.4% |
| 12 months | 60% | 32% | −8.3% | +8.3% |
Share of spans in which US$1 was worth fewer S$ at the end than at the start, from every working day since 31 Oct 2016 whose end we know; MAS’s rate as of noon. The spans overlap, so they show how often, not how many separate chances. Today the highest 12-month US$ rate is 2.46 points above the S$ one, so over 12 months a fall of more than about 2.5% takes away the extra interest, before any cost of changing money.
The past year, week by week
Bank of China publishes its US dollar and Singapore dollar promotion rates side by side every week. Take each week’s 3-month rates since Sep 2025 and put S$10,000 into each: one stays in S$, the other is changed into US dollars, placed, and changed back after 3 months at MAS’s rate on the day.
Of the 46 deposits for 3 months placed from 8 Sep 2025 to 27 Jul 2026, the US dollar one ended ahead in 25 at MAS’s rate, but in only 3 if the money was changed at DBS’s posted rates (its margin today, about 1.0% each way).

Is my money safe?
US dollar deposits are not insured
Singapore’s Deposit Insurance Scheme covers Singapore-dollar deposits only, up to S$100,000 per bank. MoneySense, the government’s financial education site, lists foreign currency deposits among the products it does not cover. The banks say the same: UOB, HSBC, ICBC, Citibank and Bank of China each write on their US dollar deposit pages that “foreign currency deposits, dual currency investments, structured deposits and other investment products are not insured”.
So the safety of a US dollar deposit rests on the bank alone. A Singapore-dollar deposit with the same bank is insured up to S$100,000.

Questions people ask
What is the highest USD fixed deposit rate in Singapore today?
On 31 Oct 2026 the highest 12-month US dollar fixed deposit rate in Singapore that needs no banking tier was 4.65% at Bank of China (in the app · US$200,000+). For 3 months it was 4.00% at Bank of China. We read the banks’ own pages twice a day.
How much more does a US dollar deposit pay than a S$ one?
On 31 Oct 2026 the highest 12-month US dollar rate that needs no tier was 4.65% (Bank of China) and the highest Singapore dollar one 2.19% (Maybank): a gap of 2.46 points a year. The gap is the extra interest; whether you keep it depends on the cost of changing money and on the exchange rate when the deposit ends. Work it out for your amount.
Why do US dollar deposits pay more?
Each currency’s deposit rates follow its own interest rates: US dollar rates follow the Federal Reserve’s, Singapore dollar rates follow S$ market rates such as SORA. When US rates are higher, so are US dollar deposit rates. The higher rate is not free money: it comes with the risk that the US dollar falls against the S$ before you change it back.
Is interest on a US dollar fixed deposit taxed?
Interest that individuals earn on deposits with approved banks in Singapore is not taxed, and you don’t need to declare it, according to IRAS.
What is the smallest amount I can place?
It depends on the bank. DBS: “For Foreign Currency FD, the minimum amount is 5,000 SGD equivalent”. UOB: US$5,000. ICBC: US$500 in e-banking, US$20,000 at the counter. Bank of China’s mobile promotion starts at US$2,000. The top promotional rates often need more: HSBC’s needs US$30,000 of fresh funds. The picker shows what each amount gets.
What if I withdraw early?
Each bank sets its own terms, and you can lose interest or pay a charge. UOB: “An early withdrawal fee may be imposed.” Standard Chartered: “Penalty charges and replacement cost will apply for all premature upliftment.” Ask before you place if you may need the money back.
Can I deposit US dollar cash?
Some banks take it, and may charge for it: ICBC charges 1% on foreign-currency cash deposits. Other ways in have their own costs: a bank may charge for an incoming transfer, and changing S$ at the bank costs its exchange margin; see what banks charge to change. Ask your bank before you move the money.
Will the US dollar go up or down?
We don’t forecast exchange rates. How far the US dollar moves shows what it has done before, and our USD to SGD page has today’s rate against the past 1, 5 and 10 years.
How we get these numbers
Twice a day, at 9:35 am and 3:35 pm, a script on our own server opens each bank’s US dollar time deposit page, the same page you would see, and reads every rate, term, amount band and condition on it. 9 of 11 pages read cleanly on the last run. A read that looks off (a changed layout, a rate moving more than 0.5 points at once, a deal vanishing) is held, and the last good rates stay up marked “being checked” until we have looked at the bank’s page ourselves.
OCBC and RHB block automatic reads, so we link to their pages instead of guessing.
The break-even uses MAS’s exchange rate as of noon and DBS’s posted US dollar rates, both read hourly for our USD to SGD page, and the Singapore dollar rates from our fixed deposit page. How often the US dollar fell is counted from MAS’s rate on every working day of the past 10 years. No bank pays to be listed, and the order is never changed by hand.
- Interest is worked out as banks pay it on fixed deposits: simple interest on the amount, for the months of the term, paid at the end.
- This page shows numbers, not advice on where to put your money. See our disclaimer, how we get our numbers and corrections.
